Doing door to door evangelism online

Recently the evangelism team was discussing how those who didn't get on with chatroom evangelism could meet people with whom they could share their faith. This lead on to the idea of door to door evangelism where an evangelist could make contact with people by writing to them through an e-mail address on a persons site. The next question that arose was what do you put in the first e-mail you send? What do you say to break the ice?

Some of the reply's are listed at the right , but why not join our team by filling in the form below. Then we can all share our thoughts and ideas and grow together as we reach the world, through the internet, with the good news of Jesus Christ.

Make comment on things about their site you like. Most people receive so much junk mail that the first thing you must do is be very clear that your letter isn't just another piece. The best way to do this is to mention something about their site that you like so that you can prove that you have visited it.

Explain that you are a Geocities Neighbor. Tell the person that you have a site on Geocities and was just exploring the sites near your own. This once again reinforces the feeling that you aren't just so weirdo or somebody spamming them.

Praise their site. It is really important to make them feel wanted and appreciated both in the initial contact and in further e-mails. Make a point of praising the bits of the site you like.

Ask questions. The object of the exercise is to get into a conversation and one of the best ways of doing this is to ask questions. Ask them about their site, how they built it, about the content etc.? This should get them talking as you are taking an interest.

Ask them about themselves. Ask a bit about themselves. Where do they come from? How old are they etc.?

Tell them a bit about yourself. Help them to feel like they are talking to a real human being by telling them about yourself a bit. Help them to get to know you.

Be enthusiastic in everything you write.

Be sincere.

Don't lie!

Don't make the mail an advert for your site. I don't think it is wrong to invite them to your site in your initial contact however be careful it doesn't come across as the only reason you are writing. Usually I will tell them a bit about the site in order to wet their appetite but stop short of giving them the URL but instead say something like "...but I don't want to bore you with all that stuff. However if you are interested in seeing it drop me a line and I will give you the URL". That way you know that if they do visit the site they will be interested. Alternatively you might say something like "I would love your opinion on my site if you would be willing to take the time to review it. It is still under construction and I would really like a third parties opinion".
