Design tips of creating a website

Always pick either a plain color or simple background for your site. Many very good sites can be ruined by complex backgrounds that make the text impossible to read.

Pick a color scheme for your site using 2 or 3 colors. Excessive use of colors can prove overwhelming to the reader.

Consider carefully your use of font. Never use more than two typefaces but rather emphasis text with color and bold/italic.

Divide your text up into headings, sub headings, quotes, body text and bullet points. Create a style for each (e.g. Body = Helvetica, Size 1, color = black) and then stick to it throughout the site. This will give the site a more unified feel and continuity throughout.

When forcing a specific font onto a site make sure it is a standards window font that everybody has on their machines.

Decide on how you want your page to be structured and then keep to it. It is worth remembering as you layout your pages that most people read a page left to right and top to bottom therefore be sure to put the most important and attractive elements in the top left. This also a useful rule when deciding how to justify your text. The normal should be to range text left with only a few exceptions for headings and quotes.

The structure should also include a navigation system and usually a banner of some kind.

Break text up into separate pages in preference to scrolling. The chances are large blocks of text will put off a visitor to your site.

Be careful to create a logical structure for your site so that people can find information quickly and easily.

Try and make all sections available through hotlinks on every page.

Always remember that many people have a poor Internet connection and so it is important to keep pages and images small. Keep file sizes to a minimum.

Keep images small and try to use flat color as this reduces file size. Use animation with caution. Many sites use animation for no good reason and it only serves to increase download time without adding to the site.

Try and design a page so that it looks OK at low resolutions such as 640x480 or 800x600 Make sure any graphics fit in with the color scheme for the site.
